The sheet is cut from 6- or 12-foot rolls. One sheet is needed for small rooms while two or three sheets are used for larger rooms. This means there are no or few seams in the flooring. Water, therefore, can't reach the subfloor where it could cause damage. Most often, the full sheet is glued down or the glue is placed around the perimeter of the room. Loose lay sheets, held down by friction, are best for small rooms. Typically, the standard flooring lasts 10 to 15 years.
Padding, or underlayment, is essential when installing this type of flooring. Padding provides added stability, and it protects the subfloor as well as the flooring. What's more, the surface of the floor is smoother when there is padding between the sheet and the subfloor. With padding, footsteps do not produce a hollow sound that is sometimes associated with this type of material. Overall, acoustics as well as insulation is improved. Some brands come with attached padding.
