Hardwood flooring is prized by homeowners

Hardwood is a high-end flooring option that is prized by homeowners for the beauty it adds to a room. Engineered hardwood, available in many wood species, is an alternative to solid wood flooring. Stick and Stone Flooring is a hardwood flooring retailer in Central Florida that offers both types of floor coverings in our showroom in Wildwood, FL. With so many styles available, you are sure to find the one that is just right for your home.

Unfinished solid hardwood

These durable floors contribute to the structural integrity of a home. Unfinished wood boards or planks are nailed to a wood subfloor, and then the finishing treatments are applied. Boards are placed tightly together, and the seams are well sealed. No stain is needed if you prefer a natural look. Floors that are stained and sealed take about one week to complete. The floor can't be walked on for an additional week while it acclimates to its new surroundings.

Prefinished solid hardwood

Currently, wood flooring that is finished in the factory is more popular than wood flooring that is stained and sealed in the home. Likely, homeowners favor this option for two primary reasons. First, the installation takes one day, and the floor can be walked on immediately. Second, factory finishes tend to be more durable than the finishes that are available to on-site installers. Keep in mind that prefinished floors have a beveled look while unfinished wood floors have a flush look. Less common wood species may not be available in prefinished boards.

Engineered hardwood

Engineered, or man-made, wood flooring has a high-quality plywood base and a real wood surface. A floor can be sanded down and refinished when it becomes worn, just like solid wood flooring. But the process can probably only be done once. Engineered is not nailed to the subfloor. It's not attached at all. Boards are designed to connect to the floor floats above the subfloor. Many crisscrossed layers make up the plywood base, and this makeup allows the flooring to tolerate moisture so it can be installed in most areas of the home.
